Halo is a 15 month old borzoi lad who has now been with us at Greyhound Gap since August. Halo came to us seriously lacking in confidence and had very poor dog skills, he had no concept of life in general and had been sheltered up until that point.
During his time with us here at the kennels Halo has spent lots of time having new experiences, his confidence has grown massively and his dog skills improved. He can still be shy when first meeting new people but very quickly offers himself up for cuddles. He has learnt how to socialise and engage other dogs much better BUT is still a very large overgrown silly puppy in the main at times with no concept of his size and this needs noting. Out and about in the main he walks well on the lead with people who understand not to allow him to lead the walk but he does need interacting with and stopping from pulling. We have worked with him using cream cheese and if he knows you have a tube of that handy you usually have his full attention focussed on you.
Halo is NOT cat friendly and is not suitable for rehoming with children pre teen because he still has his moments of careering into you and jumping up to give cuddles! He now knows in the main this is not acceptable behaviour but he is not mature enough yet to fully establish impulse control at times. Halo also isn't the best traveller and any new home needs to understand that further work needs doing with this. He is much better but can still at times get a little bit vocal and entertain his travelling companions with the renditions of his vocal range.
Ideally Halo needs a borzoi experienced home or a home with enough space and safe garden to allow him to get his *mad five minutes* out of the way. At the moment when it comes to recall in the paddock kennels it is in the main reliable with a *whats this* as he knows a reward is coming and a *lead on* as he knows another reward is imminent but he does still lack concentration and is easily distracted. Not having somewhere to get out those bursts of silly energy could probably warrant the wall of death within a small livingroom ;-) and trust me he is fast and dopey and it may no be pleasant. Housetraining wise he is good at attempting to keep his kennel clean however we feel that more reinforcement work would need to be done.
Halo needs a home with other dogs in place to help him continue to grow and settle. Ideally a slightly more mature female who would lay out very clear boundaries to him. He would not cope in a home with no other dogs around when left. Due to his size and age he also needs a home most certainly in the beginning with someone around all or most of the time to continue investing in the work we have already committed to start undertaking. Any new family will have to commit to visiting him with all resident dogs here at kennels in Stoke on Trent.
Halo is vaccinated, kc vaccinated, de flead, de wormed, microchipped and vaccinated and is currently in Stoke on Trent. If you are interested in offering Halo a home in the first instance complete our online pre-adoption form: www.greyhoundgap.org.uk/our-dogs/pre-adoption-questionnaire
